Random Clip of the Day: Mayor of Portlandia on Sprockets

A few years ago, as a big fans of Mike Myers's Austin Powers movies, we decided to buy the "SNL Best of Mike Myers" DVD to see what Mike Myers was like earlier in his career on SNL.  We were already familiar with his popular sketches "Wayne's World" and "Coffee Talk", but a sketch that just came out of nowhere and was really random and hilarious was one called "Sprockets".  "Sprockets" is a sketch about a German talk show hosted played by Mike Myers's character Dieter.  In this particular edition of Sprockets, Dieter welcomes fellow-German Karl-Heinz Shelkar to show us Germany's Most Disgusting Home Videos.  We have seen this sketch many times on DVD, but we didn't realize until yesterday that the actor who plays Karl-Heinz Shelkar currently has a recurring role on one of our favorite shows!

Look familiar?  Why it's none other than Kyle MacLachlan, who recurs on the sketch comedy show Portlandia as the mayor of Portland!  Apparently he hosted SNL back in 1990 when he was famous for starring on Twin Peaks.  It was so surreal to see Kyle MacLachlan so young and German when we're more used to seeing him act like this:

Portlandia returns to IFC for its third season on January 4th (with a Holiday Special on December 14th), and yes, The Mayor will be back!

Clip of the Day: Zombie Woody Allen

While we may not always post about them, in addition to our favorite NBC comedies we do watch many non-NBC shows too.  One of those shows is the very funny FOX comedy New Girl, from which we found today's Clip of the Day.  As big fans of Woody Allen, we really enjoyed this short clip from this week's Halloween episode of New Girl, in which each of the roommates takes turns doing their best Woody Allen impressions in response to Jess's Halloween costume.

Clip of the Day: Tom Hanks does Slam Poetry about Full House

I know this is a few days old, but we finally had a chance to catch up on our Late Night with Jimmy Fallon and came across this clip.  This is probably the most random and crazy thing I've ever seen on the show.  It's Academy Award winning actor Tom Hanks doing slam poetry about the 90's sitcom Full House.  I have no idea why, but this actually happened:

Clip of the Day: The Tracy Morgan Show!

While flipping through the channels this morning, we stumbled upon a show that we've often heard about but never seen.  A short-lived show that starred an  Emmy-nominated actor who currently stars on one of our favorite shows.  The show was The Tracy Morgan show, which aired for only 16 episodes after Tracy Morgan left SNL in 2003.  We're big fans of Tracy on 30 Rock and SNL, so we were very interested to see what his own sitcom would be like (with the knowledge that it was canceled after less than a full season).

And...we actually thought the show was funny!  Tracy was a bit constrained compared to his usual crazy Tracy character, but he still has the same comic delivery he delivers with all of his lines.  And best of all, the show starred Bobb'e J. Thompson as his son!  For those of you who aren't familiar with Bobb'e J., he is a hilarious child actor (who's actually 16 already!) who is perhaps best known for his role in the comedy film Role Models (starring opposite Paul Rudd, Sean William Scott, and Christopher Mitnz-Plasse).  He also has appeared in multiple episodes of 30 Rock as Tracy Jr., once again playing the son of Tracy Morgan's character!

Clip of the Day: Asian Jim

In last night's episode of The Office, Jim pulled one of his greatest pranks ever on Dwight.  And Jim wasn't even there to enjoy it.  (Or was he???)

Jimmy Fallon has previously impersonated music legends Neil Young, Bob Dylan, David Bowie, and Jim Morrison.  And now, he adds another to his impressive list - James Taylor!  Watch below as Jimmy as James sings about the National Conventions in a parody of "Fire & Rain" entitled "Romney & Bain".

Random TV Clip of the Day: Amy Adams on The Office

Today we woke up late and walked through Central Park to get some brunch when we happened to stumble upon the line for Shakespeare in the Park's production of the classic Sondheim musical Into the Woods.  Despite the fact that people had been lining up since 6:00am to get tickets to the free show, we were told that if we got in line now (at about 12:00), that we should still get tickets when they gave them out at 1:00.  So after an hour of waiting in line with some very chatty strangers, we got the tickets!  We're looking forward to the show tonight, which stars 3-time Academy Award nominee Amy Adams.  While Amy Adams is mostly known for her film work (Enchanted, Julie & Julia, Doubt, The Fighter, The Muppets), she actually had a recurring role on the first two seasons of The Office as  Katy, a girl who stops by Dunder Mifflin to sell purses and eventually dates Jim.  Here's a clip of Amy Adams from her first appearance on The Office as the titular character in the Season 1 finale, "Hot Girl".

Clip of the Day: William Frawley on The Lucy Show

101 years ago today, Lucille Ball was introduced to the world.  And that means it was just 1 year ago that we attended Lucy Fest 2011 for Lucy's 100th Birthday!  So in honor of Lucy's birthday, we thought we'd post a very special Clip of the Day!

After I Love Lucy ended, Lucy had another successful show on TV called The Lucy Show.  For the first 3 seasons, Lucy starred with Vivian Vance (who played Ethel on I Love Lucy) as two single mothers living together as roommates and raising their children together.  After season 3 ended, Vivian Vance left the show due to a scheduling conflict, and Lucy continued on for 3 additional seasons without her (starring alongside her always hilarious rival Mr. Mooney, played by Gale Gordon, who was introduced in season 2).

On I Love Lucy, Vivian Vance of course starred opposite William Frawley, who played her curmudgeon husband Fred.  While they played a married couple on the show, the two hated each other in real life, and after the show ended, they never spoke to each other again.  So naturally, Vivian Vance would never agree to Frawley appearing on The Lucy Show while she was there.  But, once she was out of the picture in season 4, Lucy had William Frawley make a little cameo on The Lucy Show, which turned out to be his last on-screen appearance before his death the following year.  

Ever since we finished watching the complete series I Love Lucy on DVD last year, we've been watching The Lucy Show on and off when we don't have anything else to watch.  And as it turned out, we happened to watch William Frawley's appearance on episode 6 of season 4 today, on what would have been Lucy's 101st birthday!  

So I know it's a very long and rambling introduction, but here is today's Clip of the Day, William Frawley's cameo on The Lucy Show!  Happy Birthday Lucy!

Clip of the Day: Jimmy Fallon's "Do Not Read List"

I know we haven't posted anything new in a while.  In the summertime there's just not much TV to get excited for, and the heat makes us extra lazy.  So sorry about that.  We'll try to start posting a little more regularly.

But while watching this clip from last night's Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, I was laughing so hard I just had to post it here.  In one of our favorite Late Night bits, Jimmy shares with us his "Do Not Read List".  As Jimmy points out in the beginning, these are real actual books that are just so ridiculous you won't believe they actually exist.  While the first one might make you chuckle, it's the second one that had me laughing so hard I could hardly breathe.  Check it out:

TV Clip of the Day: Charades!

I know I've been posting a lot of clips of 30 Rock lately, so I promise this isn't another 30 Rock clip.  It's a clip from Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, featuring, well, the lead cast of 30 Rock: Tina Fey, Alec Baldwin, Tracy Morgan, Jane Krakowski, and Jack McBrayer.  The gang stopped by Late Night last week to promote their big live show.  Rather than doing a big group interview, they joined Jimmy for a big game of charades.  Check out the hilarious game below:

2nd Clip of the Day: Colbert Interviews Julie Andrews

While Stephen Colbert may not have been interviewing the President like Jimmy Fallon, he was busy interviewing his own legendary guest: Mary Poppins herself, Julie Andrews.  A few months ago, we posted a clip of Stephen Colbert talking to children's author Maurice Sendak about his own idea for a children's book entitled "I am a Pole (And So Can You)".  We later reported that the book is actually going to be published and will be released on May 8 (in just a few weeks!).  So with his book release so soon, Stephen decided to talk to legendary actress Julie Andrews, who has written many children's books herself.  As you'd expect, the result is hilarious:

Clip of the Day: Obama Slow Jams the News with Jimmy Fallon

Last night, we speculated that Stephen Colbert might crash Late Night with Jimmy Fallon with Barack Obama.  Well, that didn't happened.  But while there was no Colbert, there was plenty of Obama (as well as a good amount of Dave Matthews).  Obama talked to Jimmy about politics, college, television, and even answered some Twitter questions.  But the most memorable part of his appearance would have to be when the "POTUS with the Mostest" slow jammed the news with Jimmy Fallon and The Roots.  Check it out:

Clip of the Day: Downton Sixbey

On Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, they often do parodies of many popular TV shows and rework them to be about what goes on behind the scenes of Late Night.  So far, there's been "7th Floor West" (parody of The Hills), "Real Housewives of Late Night" (parody of the Real Housewives franchise), "6-Bee" (parody of Glee), "Late" (parody of Lost), and "Jersey Floor" (parody of Jersey Shore). There hasn't been a new TV show parody in a while, that was until Thursday night's show when Jimmy and the gang released "Downton Sixbey", a parody of the popular PBS period drama Downton Abbey.  While I've never actually watched Downton Abbey, I really enjoyed Jimmy's parody, and can't wait to see what happens next.  Check out Episode 1 below, and be on the look out for some great cameos (including one from an SNL cast member!)

Clip of the Day: Max's Random Thought on Happy Endings

I know it seems like we only ever blog about NBC shows, and while most of our favorite shows are on NBC, we do love some non-NBC shows as well.  One of those shows is the ABC comedy Happy Endings.  In this week's great episode, the group spends the entire episode trying to find a good restaurant for Penny's birthday. (Penny is played by former SNL cast member Casey Wilson.  OK, so I guess there is an NBC connection.)  While the whole episode was great, my favorite part was this completely random Mary Tyler Moore-referencing clip in the cold open.  (And yes, we did happen to just do a blog post partly about Mary Tyler Moore.  That is a complete coincidence).

Happy Endings airs Wednesday nights at 9:30 on ABC (after our other favorite ABC show, Modern Family)!
